Summary of organization's recent accomplishments, goals, strategies to achieve the goals, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:In the past year, Draft Gratitude has made significant strides in advancing its mission to provide safe retirements for senior draft horses. Key accomplishments include achieving accreditation from the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), a recognition of our commitment to high standards of care. Additionally, we celebrated our 10th anniversary, marking a decade of dedication to saving and providing sanctuary for draft horses, and we proudly reached the milestone of rescuing over 100 horses.
This year, we are also excited to be building our track system, an important addition that will enhance the horses' well-being by providing more space and opportunities for movement, helping to support their physical and mental health.
Looking ahead, our primary goals are to continue providing excellent care to the horses in our sanctuary and to expand our impact by growing our donor base, securing more grants, and building a stronger, more engaged board. We aim to increase our monthly giving team, grow our emergency fund, and maintain the high standards of care that have allowed us to thrive.
Our strategies to achieve these goals include continuing to build and expand our volunteer program, which has been invaluable in providing hands-on support for daily operations. We will maintain our strong fundraising efforts, focusing on increasing monthly supporters, securing sponsorships, and applying for grants. Consistently providing high-quality care, including veterinary and farrier services, remains a priority, ensuring each horse receives personalized attention. Additionally, we are committed to offering a safe landing for senior horses, ensuring they receive the care they deserve in their retirement years. To support these efforts, we are also working to develop a more engaged, active board that will play a critical role in ensuring long-term sustainability and growth.
In the long term, Draft Gratitude aims to continue its growth while focusing on operational sustainability. Our goal is to be in a position to say "yes" to every request to take in a senior horse directly from a working farm, ensuring we can meet their needs with the highest standards of care. We are committed to maintaining top-quality care for all the horses, meeting their unique needs, and providing a safe, loving environment in their retirement years. Throughout this growth, we will uphold our core values of ethics, transparency, and compassion, while diversifying our funding sources and expanding our community outreach and educational programs to further support our mission.

To ensure that interactions between people and equines are mutually beneficial and in line with the Guidelines for Human-Equine Interactions, we provide consistent care by well-trained and experienced staff. Our volunteers are thoroughly trained and supervised when interacting with the horses to ensure safety and positive engagement. We also offer visiting days where the public can visit the farm and meet the horses. During these visits, the horses remain in their normal paddocks or stalls for their safety and comfort, while allowing visitors the opportunity to learn about their care and well-being.
All equines in our care have access to clean drinking water at all times through automatic waterers in the paddocks. They receive nutritious food, including forage/hay, with regular grain and supplement feeding twice daily. The horses also receive appropriate veterinary, farrier, and dental care, with scheduled monthly visits from our farrier and veterinarian, and additional visits as needed. Each paddock has run-in sheds, scratching posts, and clean well draining soil. In addition to our paddocks having appropriate density, and we are currently in the process of building a track system to further enhance their ability to move freely. Additionally, all paddocks are equipped with hay feeders that have roofs and floors, ensuring the hay stays off the ground and protected from any weather.
Equine Transition Services:Overview of our programs involved with rescue, rehabilitation, retraining, re-homing and/or retirement:
Our primary focus is the rescue and rehabilitation of senior farming horses.
Once rehabilitated, the horses are available for adoption to approved homes. Rescued horses that are not adoptable for various reasons will live out their days safely with us in sanctuary.
Draft Gratitude has given a second chance and a caring home to nearly 100 senior working horses.
Prior to arriving, these horses lived in farming communities, working tirelessly for years. When they can’t keep up with the workload due to age or injury, they are replaced with younger horses and are faced with a bleak fate.
That’s where Draft Gratitude steps in - regardless of the horse’s needs or prognosis.
Draft Gratitude’s dedicated team works to ensure the health of the horses in a responsible and compassionate manner.
Outreach and/or Public Education:

While the security that Draft Gratitude provides to horses is undeniable, the positive impact of this organization is not limited to the animals who receive direct care.
On a regular basis, Draft Gratitude hosts visiting days, which allows the public to visit the organization, learn about our lifesaving work, and interact with the horses in a safe environment.
Additionally, students who are working towards careers with large animals, and young people who participate in 4H and Pony Clubs, come to Draft Gratitude to learn about horse care and gain experience around draft horses.
While our dedication to education about draft horses is significant, we are also deeply committed to sharing the therapeutic bond between horses and humans with our community.
Horse-human bonding brings about a sense of calmness and therapeutic effects for both horses and people. Volunteers, students, the public, and the horses served by Draft Gratitude all benefit from the remarkable intuition of the horses.
Research/Medical Use of Equines:Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine.
Religious Affiliation:Our organization does not promote religious education, religious purposes, or a specific religious faith or use donations for religious education or religious purposes; require participants to be of a certain faith; require participation in religious, instruction, activities or services; or require participation in prayer, worship, religious instruction or other religious activities as a condition of receiving social or secular services offered.
Auction Donation:Our organization has never allowed, or would not consider allowing, an equine to be sold, transferred, released, or otherwise placed into possession of any person or organization that would cause or allow the equine to be sold at auction for slaughter.
POLICIES: INTAKE, ASSESSMENT & TRAINING
Prior to a horse being accepted and/or arriving at the facility, the organization has the following policies in place:
